Parasites, and therefore the genes that lead to resistance, are spread on pasture enabling parasites survive treatment with a dewormer that was once effective.
This can happen through:
• Overuse or misuse of anthelmintics (e.g., frequent, non-targeted treatments).
• Survival of resistant individuals that pass on their genes to the next generation.
• High pasture contamination, leading to reinfection and the need for frequent treatments.
As such, pasture control is an essential step to limit the spread of parasites and parasite resistance. Once widespread, parasite resistance will lead to an increase in the occurrence of life-threatening complications of parasites
